Today in History: May 3rd in 1802, Washington D.C. was officially incorporated as a city. The establishment of a capital city was mandated by the United States Constitution, but the location was left up to Congress. They chose a site along the Potomac River, which was centrally located between the northern and southern states. Today, Washington D.C. remains the capital of the United States.

  • 1898 Spanish-American War: Spain delares war after rejecting US ultimatum to withdraw from Cuba
  • 1916 Easter Rising of Irish republicans against British occupation begins in Dublin
