Linux Mint Tools I Install on Every New Computer
One of the reasons I enjoy using Linux Mint is how quickly a new computer can become a productive workstation. After installing Linux Mint, I follow nearly the same checklist every time. These applications have proven themselves reliable over many years and continue to make everyday computing easier.
1. Timeshift – Timeshift is pre-installed on Linux Mint
The first application I configure is Timeshift.
It creates system snapshots that let me restore my computer if an update or software installation causes problems. Think of it as insurance for your operating system.
If you only configure one tool after installing Linux Mint, make it Timeshift.
2. VLC Media Player or use the Software Manager, search for VLC
Linux Mint includes media players, but VLC remains my favorite because it plays almost every audio and video format without additional codecs.
Whether watching training videos or reviewing downloaded media, VLC simply works.
3. GIMP
For image editing, GIMP is my first choice. OR with Canva.com
It handles:
- Image resizing
- Cropping
- Removing backgrounds
- Creating graphics
- Preparing blog images
- Basic photo corrections
For many users, it replaces expensive commercial software.
4. LibreOffice
Although Linux Mint includes LibreOffice, I always update it to the newest release.
It provides:
- Writer
- Calc
- Impress
- Draw
- Base
It handles Microsoft Office documents surprisingly well.
5. Synaptic Package Manager – open the Software Manager, search for “Synaptic”, and click install.
The Software Manager is excellent for beginners, but Synaptic provides greater control.
I often use it when:
- Searching packages
- Viewing dependencies
- Removing software completely
- Troubleshooting installations
It is one of the most useful productivity tools available.
6. GNOME Disks – pre-installed graphical tool with OS
Although Linux Mint includes disk utilities, GNOME Disks offers a clean interface for:
- Checking drive health
- Viewing SMART information
- Mounting drives
- Formatting storage devices
7. KeePassXC
Strong passwords are important.
KeePassXC securely stores:
- Passwords
- Secure notes
- Login credentials
Final Thoughts
Linux Mint already provides an excellent desktop experience immediately after installation. Adding a handful of trusted applications makes the system even more capable for everyday work, content creation, and long term reliability.
My installation list has evolved over the years, but these tools consistently earn a place on every new Linux Mint computer I set up.
